Why a Hobart specialist

Three things a Hobart paint job has to get right.

Preparation beats everything — especially here.

On a Hobart exterior, the topcoat is the easy part. The job that lasts is in the preparation: a proper wash to strip dirt and salt, mould and mildew treatment, sanding back failed coatings, filling and re-puttying, and priming every patch of bare timber before a drop of finish goes on. On a weatherboard repaint, the bulk of the days on site — often seven of ten — are preparation. We don’t cut that corner, because skipped prep is the number-one reason a paint job in this climate peels inside a couple of winters.

The cold, damp maritime climate is unforgiving.

Hobart’s long cool wet stretches keep timber and render damp, which feeds mould and lifts paint, while salt air off the Derwent adds a corrosion load most mainland cities never deal with. That shortens the repaint cycle — most Hobart exteriors want a recoat every 7–10 years, sooner on exposed southern and waterfront elevations. We use paints rated for cool, damp conditions, never coat onto damp surfaces or ahead of rain, and schedule around the forecast so the finish actually cures.

Heritage and weatherboard stock needs the right hands.

Sandy Bay, Battery Point and New Town are full of Federation, Georgian and weatherboard homes — a lot of it pre-1970 and very likely carrying lead paint. That changes how you prepare: no dry sanding that throws lead dust around, proper containment and lead-safe clean-up under AS 4361.2. Heritage colour schemes and a change of colour can also touch City of Hobart heritage-precinct rules. We prep these homes the safe way and paint sympathetically to the period.
